Before signing up for a course, please apply to the CPW and Sheriff’s department and get your Eligibility Card

• Step 1: Apply for the card through Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW)

• Step 2: Contact your Sheriff’s department to submit a Government Issued ID and a 3rd party Background Check

• Step 3: The Sheriff’s Department issues you an eligibility card

• Step 4: Take the training!

• Step 5: You can purchase your Specified Semiautomatic Firearm (SSF) through your local firearm dealer (FFL)

Unfortunately, you will need this card before attending a class. It takes about a week to get one, so get signed up and reserve your spot! But please make sure you have your card before attending class.

Basic Firearms Safety Course:

You MUST have completed a Hunter’s Safety Course and HAVE IT VERIFIED by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) before signing up for this course!!!!!

If you have take Hunter’s Safety OUTSIDE of Colorado, Please Contact Colorado State and Wildlife (CPW) to make sure that they have your record on file. If you don’t, you will not be able to take the 4hr course.

Once you have received your eligibility card from the Sheriff’s Department and determined the course you need to take, we can now sign up!

Please make sure that you have an eligibility card and know what class to take. We are always happy to reschedule you or even apply funds toward another program we offer, but we do not issue refunds.

From CPS’s Website: Hunter Education Card

The hunter education instructor will issue cards to successful students at the end of the course. The Colorado Hunter Education card does not expire. If a hunter has a temporary hunter education card, from Colorado or any other state, it will expire on December 31 of the year issued. All U.S. states recognize valid hunter education certificates issued through other state conservation or wildlife agencies.

Each licensed hunter in Colorado has a customer identification number (CID). The hunter education number can be matched to the CID number to verify the hunter education card. When a hunter purchases a license and they are verified, the hunter education number and a “V” for “verified” will be printed on the license.

To get your record verified, stop by a Colorado Parks and Wildlife office with the card, or, if the card was issued by Colorado, give Colorado Parks and Wildlife a call. The card must either be in the Colorado hunter education database or an agent must physically see the card. Cards can be verified over the phone only if you have previously purchased a hunting or fishing license through Colorado Parks and Wildlife and there is a record to verify.
